Acupuncture is among the oldest forms of healing in the world. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is based on a philosophy that health is a result of a balance of yin and yang. Yin represents the female, night, death, cold, slow, or passive principle, while yang represents the male, day, birth, hot, excited, or active principle. These forces are opposite, yet complementary – one cannot exist without the other. The body is viewed as a balance between yin and yang, and therefore what happens to one part of the body affects every other part of the body. The mind and body are not viewed separately, but as part of a synergistic energy system. Similarly, organs and organ systems are viewed as interconnected structures that work together to keep the body functioning. When this balance is disrupted, the life force, or “qi” (pronounced “chee”) is not able flow correctly and as a result, disease or dysfunction occurs. Qi travels along energy pathways called “meridians” which connects all of the body’s parts.
Acupuncture treatments aim to restore the body’s natural flow of qi by placing thin, hair-like needles into specific points on the body along the meridians. Once the qi can flow, the illness, disease or dysfunction will clear.
